Let’s talk about spam

Thanks for that @samccann

Should we put first-post-requires-moderation to a vote before we enable it? Or should we just go for it?

With Steering Committee folks as moderators I feel like we have enough coverage to avoid excessive delay for approval that would discourage first-time posters.

If I were you I’d go for it, there has been no dissent AFAIK. :woman_shrugging:

Yep. It would be great to have it activated as soon as possible. There was just another wave of spam with videos (looks like porn, also from the text, but I only see a blurry picture so :person_shrugging:).

Yikes. I’m sorry you were exposed to that.

I’m looking through the admin settings but do not see an option that matches first-post-requires-moderation. I also looked in the wrench icon for each category to check those settings. Also looked through Discourse docs and threads but I’m not sure.

I’d rather ask than make a change in ignorance. Is the right setting to require mod approval the Approve post count setting under admin/users/settings?

The way I have done this on other forums is set it so that all Trust Level 0 users need to have all their posts manually approved, this does result in people sometimes needing to have more than one post to be approved — how quickly they move to Trust Level 1 depends on their and other users activity (as far as I’m aware, eg someone liking a post to the new user thread).

From reading the screenshot and searching the web a bit it seems that this is correct. I’m not sure what the two fields below that mean though.

From Configuring automatic post review triggers - Administrators - Discourse Meta it also seems correct

Thanks @chris and @felixfontein

I’ve set approve post count to 1:

I believe we can do this with the Approve unless allowed groups setting. Because trust levels are inherited (TL2 = TL1 + TL0, etc), the behaviour you describe should take effect if we change trust_level_0 to trust_level_1.

Just to be cautious and not make too many changes at once, I think we should see how things go with the approve post count setting.

A colleague suggested to have a look at stopforumspam.

I didn’t find the time to really look into this and don’t know anything about it, but I wanted to share this info with you. Maybe it would possibly help, maybe not… I don’t know but wanted to mention this to you.

There doesn’t appear to be a Discourse plugin?

Well, it looks like you’re right and there isn’t an official plugin for Discourse. But I’ve found an unofficial one.
