Future of the weekly Ansible Community Meeting

At today’s meeting we came back to this topic. Right now I ran a bit out of time, so I’m just linking to the meeting log: Meeting Log | Ansible Community Working Group | 2025-06-18 18:00:51 (note the attached full log).

general gist of it is -

  • only one or two people at most come. Usually the same one or two.
  • most meetings have limited content (pointing to async posts here in the forum)
  • much navel gazing on should we keep the meeting, should we morph it into something else (like open office hrs)

And in general, has the need for a synchronous meeting time waned as we have the forum here for discussions, and for getting answers to general ansible usser/developer questions.

I think that’s what happened automatically with the forum. It’s easier to just start a discussion here anytime instead of waiting for the meeting to do this. And you would even get more feedback: People can answer whenever they find the time to do, not just in the one hour of the weekly meeting.

Actually this is a prime example. I wasn’t able to be at the meeting yesterday but I’m commenting now here.

That said, I tend to drop the weekly meeting. Although I wouldn’t object to keeping it if you want to.

As I don’t participate anyway, I’m OK with dropping it or keeping it if people want.

Feel free to drop it - timezone is always against me anyways, and I end up checking the outcome here in the forum anyways.

Agreed, feel free to drop, don’t care either way.

2025-06-18 18:17:30 <@samccann:ansible.im> also, doesn't look like shertel is here in matrix?
2025-06-18 18:17:31 <@acozine:ansible.im> so two "lost weeks"
2025-06-18 18:17:50 <@felixfontein:matrix.org> samccann: at least not in this room
2025-06-18 18:18:42 <@samccann:ansible.im> ah good point… should matrix presence in this room be an SC requirement? or is presence in the forum good enuf?

Why? I am already accessible SO many places, I have no interest in joining matrix.

I think the rest of the discussion confirmed that SC members aren’t required to be in that matrix room.

Ok. This has been my understanding.

Meeting is officially on hiatus through July. If you feel the meeting should continue, respond here on what you want from a regular meeting time.

If there is no strong opinion to bring it back, it will be removed from the calendar etc.

If so, we should also grep for matrix through all the docs to see if the meeting is mentioned somewhere and remove it. If you need help with this and if i miss it somehow from the context here in August, please let me know (i would take it right now on my own, but it’s not decided yet)

July has ended. Do we want to remove the community WG meeting entirely at this point?

Yes, please. I think the forum has been more practical than the meetings. And again, if we ever need to have a meeting for a specific topic, we can always schedule one.

Nobody noticed that these meetings were missing, so I’m fine with removing them completely.

I’m with @russoz. If we think something like this would be useful again in the future, we can always re-start it.

For now: I didn’t miss it, so I’m fine with removing the community WG meeting entirely.

This also finds a lot of “support matrix” and similar stuff in ansible-documentation.

I think we should start simpler: grep -ri "community meeting" . finds some files. But I didn’t have a closer look yet, though.

Maybe work on this first. And then go on and search for matrix and weekly in a second and third step.

Might be time to simplify the wording and links we have in all the repos. So if we change meetings again we only have one place change.
